The Futuro Media Group is an independent non-profit media organization that produces multimedia journalism that explores and gives critical voice to the diversity of the American experience. Founded in 2010 by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, Futuro works in the public interest – informing and educating the public about compelling narratives, real lives and untold stories in communities that are often ignored or overlooked by mainstream media.
This segment will examine news stories that are generating extensive commentary and misinformation, and will also look at broader issues in the media which contribute to confusion and misunderstanding. Anchored by Latino USA executive producer and host Maria Hinojosa, “News or Noise?” segments will feature experts and youth examining media coverage, asking questions, and discussing the news literacy aspects of the story. When necessary, we will correct the record.
By taking a closer look at sources, framing and explainers of key terms and processes, “News or Noise?” will help listeners hone their skills to judge and discern what really matters in a news story. We will pay special attention to stories affecting Latinos and other communities of color, and to working with Chicago-based organizations. Through partnerships with a variety of groups, FMG/Latino USA will work with youth (16-30) to engage with the material in the segments beyond airtime. With an overall goal of improving news literacy, “News or Noise?” will invite listeners’ active listener response via social media and other interactive means, and to attend a live event in Chicago in the last quarter of 2013.
