Why News Matters is a new grantmaking program at the Robert R. McCormick Foundation designed to enhance news literacy skills and programs in Chicago and will invest as much as six million dollars in the next three years.

News Literacy Making A Difference

News literacy is the ability to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports and information sources.

It enables citizens to become smarter consumers and creators of fact-based information. It helps them develop informed perspectives and the navigational skills to become effective citizens in a digitally connected society. News literacy programs also emphasize the importance of news and information, the value of reliable sources and appreciation of First Amendment freedoms.

About Education Development Center

McCormick Foundation has selected Education Development Center (EDC) to provide technical assistance to the grantees of its Why News Matters initiative. EDC’s support includes:

  • Building the capacity of each grantee to best serve their constituents
  • Assisting in planning and evaluation efforts
  • Engaging grantees in a community of practice focused on initiative goals
  • Facilitating affinity groups to foster strong working relationships and information-sharing
