Westside Writing Project offers digital media workshops this fall

This fall the Westside Writing Project (WWP) will partner with Loyola University of Chicago’s (LUC) School of Communications (SoC) to offer a series of hands-on, digital media workshops for area students.

Workshop sessions:

Program Overview/Intro to WWP Saturday, October 11th 10:00 am-11:30 am

This workshop will introduce students/parents/ school administrators to WWP.

Research/News Literacy Saturday October 18th 10:00 am-11:45 am

This workshop will cover topics such as:

  • Selecting topics
  • News Literacy
  • Fact vs. Opinion
  • News Reports/Digital Storytelling

Social media/Advertising/PR Saturday, October 25th 9:00 am-noon

In this workshop students will be exposed to topics that include:

  • Composing press releases
  • Creating Public Service Announcements (PSA’s)
  • Differences between advertising and public relations

Broadcast/Film Saturday, November 8th 9:00 am-noon

This workshop will include topics such as:

  • Writing leads for broadcast
  • Recording mock interviews
  • Touring a newsroom
  • Analyzing a newscast

Open Work Session Saturday, November 15th 10:00-2:00pm

Students will be allowed to drop in at WWP youth media center to complete work on projects

Final Presentation Saturday, November 22nd (TBA)

View final project and award certificate of completion to students

 

Students will be accepted on a first come first serve basis – Limit 15 students

Interested students must commit to attending all workshops.

October 11th and 18th workshops will be held at WWP youth media center – 5820 W. Chicago Ave.

October 25th and November 8th workshops will be held at LUC’s downtown campus
