Quiz the media: What does it take to be a journalist in the digital age?

Do you believe in crowdsourcing media funding? Should robots write the news? Would you ever put yourself in physical danger to report a story?

On April 16, 2014, teams of journalism students from Chicago-area universities had the opportunity to ask frank questions to a panel of seasoned journalists—Maria Hinojosa (Latino USA), John Quinones (ABC), Fernando Diaz (Hoy Chicago), and Chris Bury (Al Jazeera and PBS).

The “Quiz the Media” event, hosted by the Futuro Media Group, producer of NPR’s Latino USA and DePaul University’s Latino Media & Communication program, offered a poignant, behind-the-look scenes look at journalism today and sparked a lively town hall discussion around issues that aspiring young media makers face, such as being a Latino journalist and being a female leader in the workplace.

Students from DePaul University, the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University and Columbia College Chicago’s Journalism Department presented questions in a “quiz style” forum, moderated by WBEZ Vocalo 90.7’s Luis Perez. The journalists responded about their newsroom experience, start-up media and the challenges and opportunities of being a journalist in today’s dynamic and digital environment.

The group also discussed questions around news literacy, including the importance of staying up to date with international news, the value of public information and how to navigate transparency and bias as a reporter and news consumer.

The Why News Matters team excerpted the “best of” the quiz questions below.

At the end of the session, the audience voted on the team that exhibited the best journalistic spirit, made the best use of inquiry to uncover new information, and best forth brought issues in contemporary journalism, among other requirements. A DePaul University team took home a prize kit, containing audio recording equipment, complete with a digital audio reorder, headphones and gear.

The session was supported by the Why News Matters initiative at the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.
