A welcome to new Why News Matters grantees
Last Monday, Why News Matters had its first official kick-off meeting for new 2014 Why News Matters grantees. The new cohort includes American Society of News Editors, Big Shoulders Fund, Convergence Academies at Columbia College, Chicago Public Library, Columbia Journalism Review, Mikva Challenge, Poynter Institute, West Side Writing Project and Youth Guidance. Stay tuned for program updates from these our newest news literacy grantees.
New youth and media research publication
All of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society research briefs are now online and available for download. The newest publication, Evaluation in Context: Reflections on How to Measure Success of Your ‘WNM’ Program, discusses the four phases of the evaluation cycle and looks at different methods of data collection.
The News Literacy Project’s new consumer’s guide to sourcing in news reports
Back in October, the News Literacy Project website got a makeover and with it launched its new Learn Channel. This month Paul Saltzman, assistant managing editor for projects at the Chicago Sun-Times, gives a video lesson on sourcing in news reports and evaluating a report’s credibility.
Baruch College’s “Truth Be Told” conference opens dialogue across industries to identify false equivalency
Via : In a media landscape full of false equivalency, have we lost sight of the existence and value of facts? How are facts identified and tested in medicine, business, law and journalism, and what can we all learn about information quality? These were just a few of the questions that were discussed during the dynamic conference, “Truth Be Told:” A Cross-Disciplinary Exploration of Finding Facts” hosted on January 30, 2014 by The Weissman School of Arts and Sciences at Baruch College and The Harnisch Foundation.
