Pasos al Futuro (Steps Toward the Future) completed its Third Annual Latino High School Journalism Workshop in July 2013. Twenty-eight students from 18 schools created news stories with a focus on news literacy in this summer program hosted by the the College of Communication’s Latino Media & Communication program at DePaul University in Chicago.
During this year’s workshop, students were taught by award winning journalists; created seven relevant stories, using multi-media to reach different audiences. They received their assignments, did research, created questions for the interview and headed into the field. Students researched and reported on topics, including:
-
New Chapter in Immigration
-
CPL School Closings – What Happened to No Child Left Behind
-
Gozamos – Digital Entertainment
-
Violence – Former Gang Member, Paying it Forward
-
Sports – Latinos making big play in sports
-
Yo no Speak Spanish
-
Empowering Women Inside Out
The Pasos high school journalists wrote a newspaper article, created a broadcast news story, posted on Facebook, used twitter, and instagram.
Under the direction of Rick Brown and DePaul Journalism students, the teens created a newscast. The youth also visited UNAM, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico where they recorded live Spanish intros to Spanish Public Radio. A number of students recorded questions that focused on News Literacy, to send to the award winning NPR program, LatinoUSA with Maria Hinojosa.
Finally, students visited the Chicago Public Library’s brand new Innovation Lab, maker lab and Youmedia.
PAF partnered with LatinoUSA on 10 questions created by PAF participants and recorded by Spanish Public Radio, then sent to News or Noise. As a result of this, Spanish Public Radio has asked 2 of the high school students to do public service announcements for their station.
