A McCormick Foundation Initiative

Why News Matters

True Star will lead and organize a team of youth marketers to develop a campaign geared to their peers (teens and young adults ages 12-24) that articulates in their vernacular the value of news and credible information.

The This News Matters Too project will include developing a communication strategy, impactful messaging and culturally relevant creative marketing materials using all of the True Star media platforms, including print, radio, online, social media and our on-the-ground S.T.A.Rs team (street team ambassador reps).

About True Star

True Star Foundation  is a nonprofit organization that produces a creative outlet in the form of literary and professional development programs for predominantly minority male and female youth, ages 12–18, in the metropolitan Chicagoland area. We strive to be a leader in youth programming by providing teens with paid apprenticeships through after-school and summer programs that encourage creating opportunities for themselves and their communities. Through enriching and safe environments True Star is committed to doing what it takes to give teens the opportunities that allow them to freely express who they are, while at the same time helping today’s youth understand their role and responsibility as a contributing adult to society.

Impact

  • 10 students representing  our youth marketing team developing the final campaign.
  • 25 STARs (street team ambassador reps) – Will be working to promote campaign in their schools, communities, to their friends, and community leaders.
  • Students participating in the TS program will better able to identify bias in news sources.
