Why News Matters

Students learn how to communicate science in action and share what matters to them personally in an effective way.

Using journalism standards, students actively research and develop their own story assignments to cover myths about science that have been passed down through the ages. Working with a  group of middle school students at Young Women’s Leadership Charter School (YWLCS) on Chicago’s south side, the Project Exploration Youth Science Media are doing their part to put an end to that. They are creating mini media packages that will shed the myths. Students will interview scientists while also doing their own research cover misconceptions. The program will push the students to analyze the credibility of science content via new media such as podcasts, blogs and twitter. Intensive writing and media production workshops help students learn how to edit their own work. Journalists, scientists, and media experts provide youth training and support to build technical knowledge and skills.

About Project Exploration

Project Exploration is a nonprofit science education organization that works to ensure communities traditionally overlooked by science—particularly minority youth and girls—have access to personalized experiences with science and scientists. Founded in 1999, Project Exploration’s youth programs impact the lives of hundreds of students each year by fostering and supporting a long-term involvement in science.
